I guess I have just become a bit cynical over time. I do not defend SMM but I also don't think that other big mining companies are any better or more ethical, including Australian ones (with the possible exception of Twiggy and Fortescue). They are generally aggressive, hire banks of lawyers and pursue under-financed takeover targets during periods of commodity price weakness. Equally, most seek to "minimise" tax by all legal means open to them, including the use of tax havens. To me, they have no social conscience. They're not your friends and they're all dogs with fleas who would bite the hands that feed them. The only issue which dog is the more likely to heel when you hold the whip hand (as Axiom will hopefully do soon!).
