In a 2023 study by the Cleantech Group, the cost of extracting lithium using DLE technology was estimated to be between $3,300 and $4,900 per tonne of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). This is significantly lower than the cost of extracting lithium using evaporation ponds, which is estimated to be between $5,000 and $8,000 per tonne of LCE.
The cost of DLE technology is expected to continue to decline as the technology matures and as more plants are built. This is likely to make DLE technology the dominant method of lithium extraction in the future.
Here are some of the companies that are developing DLE technology:
- Lilac Solutions
- EnergyX
- Simbol Materials
- Pure Energy Minerals
- International Battery Metals
- Volt Lithium
These companies are all working to develop DLE technologies that are more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. As these technologies develop, they are expected to play a major role in meeting the growing demand for lithium.
