Lithium industry says California wants high tax in Imperial County (behind a paywall)

"Lithium industry executives say California officials are seeking an $800 to $1,200 flat fee on every ton of the metal produced at the southern end of the Salton Sea, and they contend such a high levy would wipe out production before it begins."

Even with the high tax it appears that geothermal brine extraction has a high cost if they have no wiggle room for ~$1000 a tonne tax.

How'd they go from potential to provide 400k tonnes a year to wiped out before it begins on 1k per tonne tax? A lot of BS hype coming out of the Salton Sea and very little extracted lithium. Good news for clay miners.
