In a previous life I did a lot of highway driving and accept that most of the time, most truckies are good. Trouble is, when they are off with the fairies they are deadly, more so than a motorist.

I personally had one [ungoverned] have a damn good try at killing me DELIBERATELY [can't remember the movie, but I lived it] and another, not far from his home, make an awful error on a narrow bridge, which could have killed me. I was a defensive driver and generally stayed out of trouble. Of course I saw some motorists do some dumb things too, but never deliberately. It may be dying but in the '80s the "King of the Road" mentality was alive and well.

I have no problem with B-doubles but I only see them operating locally. I have big issues with "road trains". They are two dog trailers behind a conventional semi, double decker cattle crates. They are heavy so at speed they duck and weave all over the road. The railways used to handle this but they have, as policy, quit the trade.

Between Townsville and the Towers there is just one overtaking lane going west and none coming east. To overtake them "efficiently" 140ks is the minimum. That was a bit hairy in my 2L van!!!!

We just can't run these big trucks on our hopelessly inadequate roads. Spend the money on the roads or the rail: Don't starve them both.
