Yes a lot of practitioners hold onto their beliefs in the face of new research - it's pathetic. I don't that though. I've changed my approach hundreds of times (in tiny increments) over several decades, always in response to my reading of the literature and clinical feedback. I've proven myself wrong several times.
The public really have no chance but to do a lot of background work and try to decide whom to see. What you want is the best possible outcome for the lowest cost and in the shortest time frame possible. You'd be totally stunned at some of the crap that goes on. Probably every industry has similar stories.
