I had a micro discectomy/laminectomy performed by a neurosurgeon 4 years ago to the day and I have never looked back.

At the time I was very dubious, especially after being told it could possibly destroy my erectile function, but had little choice left as I could not walk properly anymore due to excruciating sciatic pain. I had had several cortisone shots directly into the damaged disc between L2/L3 which had given temporary relief, never for more than 3 - 4 weeks.

As long as you have had the relevant discussions with the neurosurgeon and you understand and accept all the possible outcomes. If there is any way at all to live relatively pain free I say grab it with both hands and go for it.
