Akamai is a legit service, but something you downloaded put it into your system.
Look, you need a firewall, a proper one, not a toy. Comodo is good. It also monitors activity and access in your system, not just traffic. But I admit it is a little too user input intensive for most folks - they cannot be bothered to learn how to use it to best advantage.
You need a couple of cleanup tools. I suggest Adwcleaner and Junkware Removal Tool. You will find both here:
