If they invested 6% into Rio then i'd understand. Rio makes a profit and pays a divined. They have basically taken $400k and bought a 6% stake in a high risk resource stock that makes a loss of 1M+ every 6 months.
Exposure to Liberty has actually INCREASED ALA's risk. Management of ALA have no knowledge of the resource sector. So when you stated above that "its a prudent management tool practiced by most successful business" you couldn't be further from the truth. Prudent de-risking would be ALA taking a stake in a profit producing tech company, or a business that falls within their vertical.
As i mentioned before, its like Toyota buying 6% of KFC. Why would they? They don't understand the food industry. That $400k would be better spent looking into opportunities ALA and it's shareholders understand. Its just $400,000 less that they can offer a growing tech company or an idea that comes through their incubator model.
The background noise is 100% justified. We are now not only exposed to the risk of the technology sector, but also the highly risked resource sector.
