    if you are charged and released on bail, you can go and commit further crimes as long the crime doesn't incur a greater penalty then the original offence. The criminals do this as the maximum sentence they can get is of the original charge and all further sentences are concurrent. Not additional. So the armed robber on bail going out and stealing a car isn't going to do any longer in gaol then he would ordinarily get.
