The Knitting Nannas Against Gas are planning a ‘welcome’ party outside the new office of Metgasco in Casino this week.
The Nannas will adorn the area with yellow ribbons and have a number of questions for Metgasco chief executive Peter Henderson.
Mr Henderson told Sydney media last month that Metgasco was planning to return to the Rosellla site at Bentley within three months, and that the company would probably need a police escort to access the site.
Metgasco won a court victory in April after challenging the state government’s decision to suspend its drilling licence for the Bentley site.
The government announced the suspension just days before up to 800 police were due to arrive on the north coast to break the Bentley blockade, where thousands of people had gathered to stop any drilling.
Buoyed by its success in court, the company announced it would seek compensation from the government, and resume its exploration activities.
Nanna’s spokesperson Clare Twomey said the Nannas had some questions for Mr Henderson.
Ms Twomey said the Nannas wanted to know what the company’s plans for public consultation were, and which residents’ groups would be approached.
They also want to know how the company could guarantee the safety of the land, air and water for future generations during, and after, any drilling at the Rosella site.
Other questions include: ‘How do you plan to get your drilling rig into the Rosella site when the community overwhelmingly does not want you?’ and ‘Do you expect the tax payer-funded NSW Police to smooth your way past the hundreds of protectors who have already told you: No?’
The Nannas will gather outside the Metgasco office at 117 Barker Street, Casino, from 9.30am to 11am on Thursday.
