could i recommend looking at ETF's, such as ones traded on the ASX as to minimize management and transaction fees
as little as 1-2% fees makes a very big difference. i'd personally go with ETF's as their is a wide variety of indexes to choose from all with low costs
you could start from looking at Vanguard or Blackrock, both have an abundance of options, from ASX200 and S&P500 indexes to emerging markets, hedged and unhedged options
