I've been stewing over this 'think like a business owner mindset' for a while now. I'm still not sold on it. At this end of the rollercoaster anyway.
I am a part owner in a portfolio of business linked to the economic cycle. If I deny that fact, I am deluding myself. I don't operate the businesses, I don't personally pay my employees wages, I dont have to hire and fire, etc. In short I am not emotionally invested in the business. I dont live and die by its success. My mortgage and life is not tied to its success. I dont therefore own a perpetual can of clear gloss and live in denial of the debt cycle that drives us all.
I have the option of not enduring the worst of times. I am purely an investor, not a milk bar owner/operator like munger et al who bang on about having a business owners mindset thru thick and thin. They cant sell the milk bar with one click.
Even Ben Graham lost 70% of his paper worth in the depression contraction. Almost wiped him out. Sure he recovered. But was it intelligent? He learnt the hard way.
I'm conservative at this end of the rollercoaster. Stuff buffet and the business lobby gospel "oh happy days" choir, im listening to fisher from here. But thats just me
