    I'm off to Bali in January also. We stay in Kuta (no. I am not a bogan..) Wife loves the hussle and bustle. Never been to Sanur.

    Some very good cheap hotels in Kuta itself. We stay at the Wina Holiday Villa (it is not a villa by the way). Never had a bad experience there.
