AUSTRALIAN tourists have begun boycotting Bali as public anger mounts over the jailing of Gold Coast beauty student Schapelle Corby.

John Forsyth, who organised the first Australian visitor tours of Bali in the mid-1960s, said holiday bookings for Bali were collapsing.

"Australians are deeply distressed about her predicament and in particular about the way the Indonesians are handling it," said Mr Forsyth, who owned the Indonesian Travel Centre for 35 years until he sold it last year. Mr Forsyth said his company Villas of Bali and Asia, which usually sends about 150 Australian tourists a month to Bali, had experienced a 60 per cent downturn in bookings in recent weeks as a direct result of Corby's jailing.

He said other agencies were experiencing similar falls.

Mr Forsyth said some people were not travelling to Bali because they feared their luggage would be tampered with and they would suffer a fate similar to Corby's. However, most people were protesting at her treatment by putting off travel plans.
