China's trade surplus swells as import growth wilts
January 10, 2012
China's exports grew 13.4 per cent in December from a year ago, the customs office said on Tuesday, a bit weaker than market expectations for a 13.5 per cent rise, while import growth slumped.
Imports rose 11.8 per cent last month, well below the median forecast for a 17.0 per cent increase in a Reuters poll and even further below the 22.1 per cent growth in the year to November.
That left the country with a trade surplus of $US16.5 billion in December, taking China's full-year trade surplus to $US155 billion in 2011, down from $US183.1 billion in 2010.
