Back in the good ol' days when we were all perfect Many/most didn't get married. Marriage was a contract because it was used by the rich to control were their inheritance (title etc) went.

For those who did marry, it was at best serial monogamy, Remember there was high maternal death rates in childbirth and there were many petty wars for the men. The losing side in most battles had a death rate >50%. Add in the level of OH&S in the general workplace. So a high turnover of men and women.

Personaly as long as the children are provided for, I don't understand why the state should be involved in marriage at all. If a couple want a religious blessing then go for it.

Otherwise go down the French route where legal marriage recognised by the state is ONLY performed by the local mayor, with no religious attachment. If you want a church ceremony, you do that seperately before or after the state ceremony with your choice of religious celebrant and church.
