09:27GMT 11Jan2005-Vodafone's Japan woes deepen on Dec. subscriber gains

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

LONDON - Vodafone shares dipped 0.7 percent as the mobile phone giant's problems in Japan deepened. An industry report showed Vodafone KK added a net 900 new subscribers in December, in contrast to the 247,500 net additions for market leader DoCoMo.

"Miserly net adds of just 900 in December illustrate that Vodafone's position in Japan continues to be in retreat. This is a big deal given the business represents around 25 percent of group revenues," said Mark James, analyst at Nomura. He repeated his "sell" rating on its shares.
