When it comes to gun control in the USA, Australia has forever been used as an example of how gun control works.
It's no surprise your average person is misled into believing this is true, when in fact our own government websites, whether its the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) or the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), will always present people with crime stats from 1990 onwards.
Why? Because it make banning guns look good on the charts (I'll explain later)
To those who are interested in crime rates in Australia, I implore you to go and look for historical homicide date in this country. It's very tedious to sift through the historic data on these two websites for murder/homicide rates pre-1990. It's not that the data doesn't exist, it's that they'd prefer it to be a bit difficult to find.
You'll be sifting through 10 or 20 different charts like this one that promote gun control in Australia:
These charts look great, right??
Less people are dying to guns..
But isn't the purpose of gun control to reduce overall homicide/murder rates across the country?
Then you'd be very confused to find that the murder rate actually increased for a number of years after the gun control took place.
Why? Because if people want to commit murder, they'll find a way.
So there is a very political reason why the ABS and the AIC show homicide data from 1989 or 1990 onwards to promote how effective gun control has been, because they were the peak years in homicide rates in Australia:
(This chart is from the ABS here)
Gun control works at limiting gun violence. It doesn't work at limiting homicide/murder rates.
Take away a gun, they'll replace it with a knife, a vehicle, or a crowbar...
The argument for gun control using Australia as a benchmark is a false one. It doesn't prove anything in regards to gun control, only that it severely restricts access to weapons.
But wait. Our homicide rate is now only 1 per 100,000 and not 1.8 per 100,000! Gotcha!
Overall trend in homicide has been in decline, but it is not a direct result of gun control.
If that were true, then gun control is equally responsible for reduction in hands/feet being used in homicide or other tools used to kill people.

We are seeing a social change which has reduced the overall murder rate in this country. We know this because all other methods of killing people have been in a declining trend (see above chart).
Next time someone tells you Australian gun control works, call them out on their BS.
All charts and data here have sources attached.
All sources are either from the AIS or the ABS.
This is how you do proper research, by using real sources of information.
