Some ESG funds will never be able to invest in fossil fuels, others still stay invested across the investable universe, but will weight stocks +/- due to their perceived ESG rating
eg company RIO (just making this up) has poor ESG, so they may get down-weighted vs their normal market cap weight, either at the fund level or index construction/benchmark level (eg an S&P ESG weighted index).
And the company say BRK (made this up?may have a good ESG score so may have a higher weighting
