Adding in a third party to your theory is a little unsporting, but it doesn't speak to how the price is "taken" after the position is put on. If, as @colinchi has pointed out, the positions have been opened and closed multiple times on the way down, how is it that closing doesn't put upward pressure on price in the analogous way that selling puts downward pressure?

A third party theory is an interesting one though, which bears some serious consideration - do you have any precedents to point me to?

As an aside, I treat your questions with due consideration and respect. Some of them question the most basic assumptions, which is a Good Thing as that's how we find new things.
