Uranium mining in Australia has a profoundly dubious history in terms of water contamination, environmental degradation, mine worker health and safety, and remediation after a site has played out. For example, about 8 or 9 years ago the Federal Government resolved to spend several million dollars on figuring out the best way to finally clean up the Rum Jungle site - which had shut down 40 years previously! Then there are the ongoing water issues at Kakadu, issues with transporting produce etc.

At the other end you have the issue of nuclear waste. Australia is geologically stable and has a lot of areas where no one lives, however, no one wants the stuff anywhere even remotely near their areas, which is why there was a huge backlash against the Muckaty proposal.

It is worth noting as well that in the USA the nuclear power industry is heavily subsidised by the taxpayer, which I imagine is also the case in France and elsewhere.

Having said that, I think we - humankind - need to act quickly. Large scale solar thermal, tidal, wind, PVs, hydro and nuclear are probably the mix we need to have delivering close to 100% of our power within the next 10 to 15 years. Maybe in the future we will be able to phase out nuclear and depend exclusively on renewable power but we don't have the luxury of being puritans right now.

They phased out nuclear at fukushima and should have it cleaned up some time in the next 3000 years.
