One particular entity traded ~6m NUH shares last week for a net gain of ~500k. Looks like it worked for them.
But yes, only a few "stray" retail sellers lately. None of them long termers. Volumes are, as you say, anaemic. (Which of course makes it easier to "move" the share price.)
Don't rely on the old "they will have to buy it back". It many cases of shorting they are already accumulating the volume they need plus more - and when the time comes they can return the borrowed shares and keep the rest.
One particular stock I own has regularly been in the Top 20 shorted stocks on the ASX. A large Australian "fund" has declared they are shorting the stock in one of their "short" funds - meanwhile in one of their "long" funds they have been adding.
We are but minnows. But we can take advantage of what "bigger fish" are doing.
