"The mining giant vowed to spend its riches wisely after reporting $US21.3 billion ($30.4 billion) underlying profit, thanks to consecutive years of record prices for its heritage assets such as iron ore and coal and shrewd management decisions by chief executive Ken Henry. That has set BHP up with almost zero net debt and a huge cash warchest to chase growth options in green metals, like last week’s $8.3 billion bid for copper miner OZ Minerals, resources reporter Peter Kerr writes."
