More than 500 electric vehicle chargers will be rolled out across NSW over the next two years as part of a $40 million government bid to spur uptake of the technology.

Fast and ultra-fast chargers will be installed at 86 locations through Sydney’s suburbs as well as regional NSW towns as the government works to quell so-called range anxiety associated with electric vehicles. The renewable energy ultra-fast chargers will be able to charge modern EVs from 20 to 80 per cent battery in about 15 minutes.Towns included in the rollout include Griffith, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Narrabri, while charging stations will also be built in Randwick, Cabramatta, and Chatswood. The government is working with Ampol, BP, Evie Networks, Tesla, the NRMA and Zeus Renewables to install the chargers.

The government’s long-term goal is to ensure chargers are no more than 5km apart in metropolitan areas and 100km apart in regional NSW.

NSW has the second highest electric vehicle uptake in Australia, with the ACT leading the country at more than 9 per cent. EVs now represent 3.39 per cent of all vehicle sales nationally. The government last year announces ced a $500 million electric vehicle package, which abolished stamp duty on battery-powered cars under $78,000, and set out a future plan to implement a road user charge by 2027.Once the 2.5 cent-per-kilometre charge is implemented, stamp duty will be abolished on all electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Each of the 86 charging sites will contain between four and15 charging bays. The Electric Vehicle Council rated the ACT and NSW highest in its October State of EVs report, while NT, WA and Tasmania were the lowest ranked states.

It is coming rapidly as they have got no choices to combat the global climates
