remember SS has assets under custody worth over $40 TRILLION (over twice US GDP). State Street - so they have lots of resources.
I said elsewhere (maybe on a PLS thread) the yearly petrol sales world wide is over $1 trillion pa - and a large part of this will disappear in a decade or so. They would be pulling out all stops to protect their current investments . Also they have a long record of not being good corporate citizens.
