yeh it's an important point people must understand. there is no replacement, none, zero, zilch, for lithium in EVs. nothing is light enough and energy dense enough to allow a power to weight ratio needed to allow an EV to have enough range to be suitable for road use.
stationary storage is different in some contexts and that may splinter into different chemistries.
so you're right, the anode and cathode development is still ongoing, but the guts of the battery will not change.
