Bigger reason is opportunity cost -- low interest rates (like the level they used to be) meant that if you want to get any sort of return on your investment, you had to invest in equities or property. Now that rates are higher, leaving your money sitting in a savings account has become much more appealing, especially for the average Joe who isn't financially literate (hence why we are seeing less speculation and less money coming into stocks price at the lower end of town). As rates go back down, equities will become more appealing and funds will be moved from savings accounts to equities
