The total outstanding shorts are reported on a 4 day trailing time frame. This figure includes all borrowed shares which may or may not be sold on market yet. On occasion there is a big reduction in shorts where they have been bought back but not returned and they are returned in a large parcel. This happened with Liontown when about 10 million from memory were returned 2 days before the takeover offer.
The total shorts sold on a given day are reported the next day.
