The federal government will back a rare earths mine and processing facility in Central Australia with an $840 million loans and grants package, amid heightened global competition for critical minerals.The money will go to the Gina Rinehart-backed mining company Arafura to further develop its Nolans Project, a rare earth mine 125 kilometres north of Alice Springs, with the government saying the project will position Australia as a leader in ethical and sustainable manufacturing of rare earths.Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King said the Commonwealth was investing in the project to ensure Australia could capitalise on its vast deposits of rare minerals."The main consideration is that we compete on the world stage with our natural resources??????
