"Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and Commercial Readiness Level (CRL) are the two key metrics that can be used to determine if a deep tech venture has future potential and if it tracks well towards success. TRL deals with how mature a technology is, where TRL 1 is assigned to an idea, and TRL 9 is assigned to a mature technology that is used in its reverent business environment. Similarly, CRL 1 is assigned to an unproven and untested business idea, while CRL 9 represents a business that has launched a product and has revenue. TRL is known internationally, is becoming more popular in Australia, and is being used more than ever before by funding bodies as a measure of risk a technology faces from a technical point of view. CRL is a lot less used and is a relatively unknown metric, but one that is sometimes is even more important than TRL. Each technology-based venture should map their position on a TRL/CRL map and work out steps and strategies towards pushing their venture to the bottom-right corner of the below chart, where the risk of realising Return on Investment is minimised.
