Here is an interesting extract from the "DEPARTMENT of HEALTH and HUMAN SERVICES Fiscal Year 2014 Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund Justification of Estimates for Appropriations Committees":
The FY 2014 request for Project BioShield is $250,000,000, which is $250,000,000 above the FY 2012 level. The President requests this funding as part of a new multi-year commitment to ensure the Nation’s protection against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats (CBRN).
The request is needed to maintain national security and send a clear signal to private-sector partners that the Federal government is committed to procuring novel MCMs against CBRN threats. At this level of funding, BARDA can make the following three acquisitions in FY 2014:
1. Purchase a new artificial skin replacement therapy for definitive care treatment of thermal and radiation burns experienced in persons exposed to a nuclear or other fire event.
2. Replenish the existing stockpile of smallpox vaccine for immunocompromised persons.
3. Pay maintenance costs for a vendor-managed inventory of anti-neutropenia cytokines used to treat persons exposed to high amounts of ionizing irradiation.
While the meaning of this for Calzada is not explicit, I am encouraged that 2014 may see the long-discussed BARDA grant come to fruition.
