Riversdale Mining studies transfer at sea of coal mined in Mozambique [ 2011-02-16 ]
Maputo, Mozambique, 16 Feb ? Australian group Riversdale Mining has hired two companies in Mozambique to carry out environmental impact studies for a project to transfer coal from barges to large cargo ships, Mozambican newspaper Not?cias reported.
Considering the limitations of the port to receive large cargo ships, Riversdale Mining plans to analyse the environmental impact of using barges to transport coal from the port's terminal and then transfer it at sea to then send it on to its export markets.
The Riversdale Mining source cited by Not?cias did not give figures for the investment involved but said that a public presentation followed by a discussion of the project to transfer the coal via the port of Beira would take place at a meeting scheduled for the next few days at the port city.
This is the strategy adopted by the company to minimise the costs of transporting the coal mined in the Benga region. In Tete province the Australian company holds several exploration licenses, covering a combined area of 200,000 hectares.
The source said that currently the coal potential at Tete was very large, which resulted in the need for mining companies to find several ways of transporting the coal to the market.
As well as transferring the coal at sea, Riversdale Mining has been studying the possibility of transporting the coal along the Zambezi River, as the company has come to the conclusion that the capacity of the Sena Railroad is at its limit, even before the railroad starts operating. (macauhub)
