Barnaby can't pull the pin until he has something else lined up and he's not got a lot of options. He's got two families to feed now. At least half his assets are Mrs Joyce's for the taking. He understands he's a liability with his "skills" outside government. Toxic name for a little while yet and no one will want him as a lobbyist if Shorten's running the place. Even the Gina family gave him a whack, the only guaranteed money is the government dole he's currently got his nose in.
We've seen with Abbott when he had to take out a 700k second mortgage after losing government in 07 that some of these blokes aren't exactly prudent with the coin. But at least Tones knew he'd be hanging around long enough to pay it back. For Joyce this is short term financial survival.
