I am currently one, in central west NSW, and the idea of going many miles without seeing a single tree here is simply unbelievable in this region. For a hundred miles in any direction I choose to go. Can't speak for WA. It is almost impossible to clear trees on any scale, despite popular perception, and this also applies to invasive woody weed that is itself environmentally desructive and not in keeping with the natural landscape. I and many others I know actively go out of our way to plant new trees - I am particularly fond of kurrajongs (great trees on multiple levels - native, provide feed in drought, fire retardant) - and without the efforts of farmers to control them I cannot imagine the scale of invasive weeds and feral animals that are destructive to native wildlife.
