All the various end applications will be tested before they ever get used and no doubt customers will be looking at this data before they purchase. Reality is very soon the risk for ip holders won't be can we substitute allot their parts manufactured by conventional means by a 3D printed equivalent - it will be can they afford not to. I say this as in the effort to save costs they will want to/need to streamline their manufacturing. Not to mention 3D printing will be able to usher in the era of easily customised products that can be printed for the same cost as a mass produced one.

If you are an ip holder all you care about is that 1) your ip is protected, and 2) you get a return on your investment. The cost to manufacture is a huge investment just to get a return from your ip - if ip holders could side step this they would jump at it. In fact the biggest risks to current big industry ip holders is that 3D printers would reduce the barriers for smaller boutique manufacturers to enter - which would open the arena of competitive threats. This in itself would drive both further innovation and make the costs of design ip's cheaper.
