A desal plant is an environmentally unfriendly sledge-hammer approach to solving the problem. There was plenty of advice to the government at the time that distributed water tanks would have been a much more cost effective way of solving the problem, and much less carbon intensive. I realise it was meant to be powered by renewables but there were some shenanigans as Cerhob says. In any case, the few renewables we have should be used for what they are meant to be used for - producing clean energy for the grid - not producing energy for offsetting an energy intensive desal plant. I don't vote Liberal, or Labor any more, for that matter.
OK, so I get the pun now, based on ACB's typo of "reigns" rather than "reins". *Chuckle*
