Harry,
There are several network operators around Australia currently trialing the use of consumer solar PV and battery storage to supply peak demand.
If this was to become wide spread I can foresee the power stations designed to supply peak demand becoming unnecessary.
Don't get me wrong, base load generation would still be required however the pressure that peak demand puts on the grid would be greatly minimised.
With newer technology, tap changes will become more automated and respond automatically when necessary, this technology already exists.
Network operators will need to adapt, and be better regulated.
Easier said than done, here's to hoping.
