There is no doubt that electrifying the world's vehicle fleet will be a challenge for power supply systems . But I think the author misses the point . He assumes that we will use hybrids because we can't find somewhere to charge their ev's .
In the interim hybrids will be used quite a bit because of a lack of charging facilities or maybe in places like the outback . But eventually charging points will be everywhere . Cars have to be parked somewhere so parking spots will incorporate charging .
At the same time autonomous cars will be rolled out . If you read the research in this area , conventional car ownership is expected to drop dramatically . All those parking spaces that were traditionally used where vehicles sat idle 90% of the time will be gone . As the infrastructure for autonomous vehicles develops , it will incorporate charging and probably it's own energy storage and generation .
What the author is missing is that the idea is to reduce our co2 emissions overall . So while ev's will shift energy use from petrol and diesel to power stations , what he failed to mention is that the power will come from renewable resources . Renewable energy is growing every day and getting cheaper as well . Old power stations are either being replaced by renewables or HELE coal or gas so that net effect is that emissions are reduced during the transition . Ultimately , the vehicle fleet will become electric and the power system will be mostly renewable so emissions will be very small .
