Batteries are a fascinating area of tech development.
In one respect I have little doubt that cars will eventually go electric.
The real issue is where does all the energy to charge them come from?
Think of it this way; all the energy currently provided by petrol and diesel has to be substituted with electricity. Yes there are some differences in thermal efficiencies etc.
But if all cars convert to electric in 20 years then will have to massively increase the grid power supply (double, treble, ...) to 'fuel' them?
Will the currently (claimed) 'gold-plated' grids soon prove to be inadequate?
Interesting times ahead for power industry and politicians.
