In the meantime, reflecting forecast coal generation closures in Australia which may well be postponed should circumstances change and electricity prices rise if we enter another drought period with lots of heatwaves.
Australian Energy Market Operator: AEMO said the withdrawal of 23 gigawatts of coal from the grid by 2043 would require 45 gigawatts of new battery and hydro storage as well as 9 gigawatts of gas-fired generation for peak loads and firming to replace the gap.
The rapid closure of coal-fired power plants would also need an urgent $12.5 billion in transmission investment to help link new solar, wind and other generation to the grid.
