When you talk about "mistakes", they should be more correctly referred to as actions that were in accordance with the rules, standards and laws of the day.
Most people were simply trying to do their best within the framework and limitations of the time.
When judged by a completely different set of laws and standards it is not surprising that there is room to cry foul, especially when it fits the media narrative of the day.
