The official story is that it wasn't rigged. Even Chamath (who was all guns blazing at first) now concedes that some brokers were at risk of not being compliant. Should they have allowed themselves to be in this situation in the first place? Of course not. Robinhood has known for some time that they are exposed to black swan events and Interactive Brokers already suffered an $88 million loss when oil futures went negative.
However, in saying that, the timing of it all was certainly very curious.
