they are not a share in any company (in a legal company membership way). nor are they a share (in a legal company membership way) in the maker eg betashares, vanguard etc.
they are a manufactured unit of value that comes from a trust relationship with the maker (trust in a legal sense not a "I trust my mum" sense).
the makers policy will not allow a zero unit value. at some value point the etf will be closed and the remaining assets liquidated and distributed to unitholders.
