I really like your thinking but have a look at PGF (l am also looking at LSF). PGF have beaten their index over a long period using a mix of index and direct shorts. it looks like their balance of 110% equities is roughly 12% shorts and 98% equity. l have held PGF for a decade really like the world exposure, high fully franked divs and the capital growth.
happy to hear ideas.
yes for the average person l reckon ETF's are best (they weren't in radar 40 years ago) shorts are very dangerous Bonds / Fixed Term and cash (ticker AAA) is ok l reckon.
