Another good bit of psychology which sounds really dumb is to get your 15 year old son to look at a chart and tell you what it's doing.
This takes away an amazing amount of emotional baggage and is extremely helpful, especially if you have lost your objectivity. Also explaining why you were going to buy makes you look/think more clearly too.
