Population movements can be a good guide to the reality on the ground. In 1950 there were about 300 000 Jews in Morocco. There are now about 5000. In Tunisia there were about 100 000 Jews, now about 1500. Egypt had about 85 000 Jews, now just a handful. That tells us something about what life on the ground must have been like for Jews in those countries. They elected to flee. The Arabs in Israel remain. The chant "F#ck the Jews" that rang out in Sydney following the Israeli retaliation didn't have its origin in this country.
