I was surprised that 1/4 of city's energy consumption is coal.  I thought it would be greater.

The authorities missed their 2013 target of replacing all coal fired equipment in Beijing article(refer 2012 article: http://www.china.org.cn/environment/2012-03/05/content_24804878.htm).  Note the reference to the city's 2.15 million small coal furnaces that burn inferior coal and the billions invested by the city to replace coal-fired heating.  Undoubtedly they will be coverting coal fired stations to gas fired stations. The investment capital required is huge.  Hopefully there will be no slow down in China.

One of the challenges is the compounding demand for energy by China's rising classes.  More than 100m people live on less than $400 p.a.  China's demand for coal will continue for a long while yet - it cannot just move away from coal as the cheapest energy source and keep a lid on social unrest - there is no welfare safety net for the 10M people employed in the country's coal mines.

I have not travelled to China, but would have thought that auto emissions would be a major contributor to choking air pollution as it was in LA 60 years ago and London before that.   Converting trucks/lorries and buses to "powered by natural gas" should be at the top of the list.
