    Benzene can be naturally occuring from coal, yes.

    It's just unlikely to have got its way into the upper aquifers at Kingaroy by itself because they are separated from the coal by about 60m of rock and clay. It was likely the casing failure that introduced (minute amounts of) benzene into the aquifers.
