I follow the Italian scene failrly closely, and I can assure you that what finished Alitalia off was not Berlusconi but all the union featherbedding and waste that went on for decades. The gravy train (or "plane" had to come off the tracks eventually--particularly when Alitalia had to compete against non-protected airlines. Alitalia's goosae was cooked before Berlusconi came to power.
