Ex-Bull has it correct. What people think in the center of Sydney is far removed from what people think in the outer suburbs / bush.
The outer suburbs aren't 'progressive' and don't pander to the left wing nice to have views. All they think of is the cost of living - how to pay the mortgage and how not to lose their job etc etc. Frankly they don't give a stuff about leftie progressive politics such as 'homosexual marriage / human induced climate change etc etc'.
Whether you like it or not Bernardi taps into this. 50,000 people is evidence.
I've met him a few times - I've never seen him 'froth, spit bile' or whatever other adjectives you have stated.
